The idea of "free trade" has long benefitted the US above and beyond its trading partners, even its more developed ones. The US had taken a number of dreadfully immoral and unjust economic and military endeavors to ensure that we win out big with trade agreements. Of course, trade is spun to the public as a great exercise of freedom and democracy.
